You can exercise and cut calories, but sometimes, there are pockets of fat on the body that just won’t budge. The truth is that you can’t get rid of these localized areas of fat through weight loss efforts alone. When you need some help, that’s where liposuction comes in.
Dr. Small has many years of experience conducting safe and skillful liposuction on a variety of areas of the body and face/neck to provide a tighter contour and shape. Both men and women often have liposuction performed on the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, upper arms, calves, and knees. It can also eliminate a double chin or “turkey neck” appearance and get rid of jowls on the face.
Bear in mind that liposuction is a surgical facial or body contouring procedure, not a weight loss technique. You should be very close to your ideal weight before proceeding with this surgery.
The Liposuction Procedure
Liposuction is usually performed under general anesthesia rather than a local anesthetic and sedation, but this varies depending on the area to be treated. Dr. Small will discuss this with you during your consultation so that you know exactly what to expect during your surgery.
Liposuction is a “vacuum” technique that removes the excess fatty tissue precisely with a cannula. As small an incision as possible is made in the area where the fat is to be removed, and the cannula is inserted through the incision.
Dr. Small strives to make your liposuction procedure as minimally invasive as he can while also providing you with the results you want.
Recovering from Liposuction
Dr. Small might ask you to wear a compression garment for days to weeks. This will speed your healing process and reduce swelling. Some inflammation is inevitable, however, as well as bruising and soreness.
You can take pain medication and use cold compresses to help you along during this healing process. For most people, the discomfort isn’t substantial.
You may need to alter your sleep habits for a week or two depending on the area where you have been treated, and you will need to avoid exercise and alcohol for a few weeks, as Dr. Small instructs.
You will look better pretty quickly, but it might take a little while for the swelling to completely subside. You will then be able to see the slimmer you.
You can maintain the results of your liposuction procedure by maintaining a steady weight and exercising regularly.
Complementary Procedures with Liposuction
Dr. Small frequently performs liposuction as part of a facelift or neck lift, and it is almost always part of body contouring, post-bariatric reconstruction, a Mommy Makeover, and a tummy tuck. He sometimes uses it during a breast reduction as well.
