Most Popular Plastic Surgery Procedures

More patients are seeking out plastic surgery procedures, according to the latest numbers from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, (ISAPS). More than 20 million surgical and non-surgical procedures were performed worldwide in 2014, with the U.S. leading the pack with more than four million procedures done. Both men and women are having more cosmetic procedures today, although the top procedures vary somewhat between genders.

Leading Non-Surgical Procedures

Men and women had more Botox injections than any other non-surgical cosmetic treatment, with more than 4.8 million performed across the globe in 2014. Botox acts as a muscle relaxant, smoothing away fine lines and facial creases in areas like the forehead, brow line and around the eyes. Other popular choices in this category include:

  • Hyaluronic acid injections (more than 2.6 million)
  • Hair removal (more than 1.2 million)
  • Chemical peels (nearly 500,000)
  • Laser skin resurfacing (around 480,000)

Men also underwent a proportionately large number of microdermabrasion treatments, with around 48,000 completed during 2014. Women also had more than 318,000 microdermabrasion treatments.

Surgical Procedures

Surgical procedures differed somewhat between men and women. Women had 8,245,769 plsastic surgeries, making up 85.5 percent of all procedures performed in 2014. The most common surgical procedures requested by female patients included:

Men had a total of 1,399,626 plastic surgery procedures in 2014, which was 14.5 percent of all plastic surgeries performed during that year. The most popular procedures for men were:

  • Eyelid surgery (more than 295,000)
  • Rhinoplasty (nearly 235,000)
  • Liposuction (around 175,000)
  • Gynecomastia (around 172,000)
  • Fat grafting (more than 156,000)

Gynecomastia is also known as male breast reduction surgery, which has become a popular way for men struggling with enlarged breasts to achieve a more masculine body contour. Fat grafting, a procedure that has grown in popularity with both genders, is a relatively new technique that involves removing isolated pockets of fat from one area of the body and injecting the fat cells into another. For example, the patient might choose to remove fat from the midsection to meet body contouring goals and then inject the harvested fat into the cheeks and jawline to create a more youthful facial profile.
