Post-Bariatric Reconstruction

Bariatric surgeries are procedures to help obese patients lose weight. They can include gastric bypass, gastric band, gastric sleeve, or duodenal switch procedures. The problem is that a substantial amount of loose skin can be left that is not only unsightly but limits your activity. Folds of skin can result in rashes or the breakdown of skin tissue, resulting in infection. This excess, stretched skin simply must be removed through post-bariatric reconstruction.

Post-bariatric plastic surgery isn’t just one procedure, however. It’s a set of procedures depending on your needs that contour and tighten your body to get rid of the excess skin, as well as any remaining pockets of fat.

For this reason, it may take some time for your full reconstruction to be completed. You must allow your body to recover from one procedure before moving on to the next. However, some surgeries might be performed simultaneously to reduce the number of recovery periods. During your consultation, Dr. Small will advise if this is possible for you.

Dr. Small has worked with numerous patients to help them start a new life after bariatric surgery. His experience with post-bariatric surgery allows him to contour the body with as few scars as possible.

Post-Bariatric Reconstruction Procedures

Arm Lift (Brachioplasty). This procedure is frequently performed to remove excess skin on the upper arms.

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty). Almost all post-bariatric reconstructions include a tummy tuck to remove excess skin in the abdominal area, flattening the stomach and trimming the waistline.

Buttock Lift A buttock lift removes lax skin in the buttocks for a tighter look.

Thigh Lift (Thighplasty). In a thigh lift, Dr. Small removes excess skin and localized pockets of fat from the inner and/or outer thighs.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy). Many women find that their breasts sag and are deflated after weight loss. A breast lift restores them to a higher placement.

Recovering from Post-Bariatric Reconstruction

Each procedure has its own recovery period, and you must wait for a period of time before proceeding with the next surgery. No two cases are the same, so Dr. Small will create a schedule for you and will monitor your progress carefully throughout your reconstruction.

Complementary Procedures with Post-Bariatric Reconstruction

To enhance their new look, some patients decide to have a facelift or neck lift or other facial plastic surgeries, such as a brow lift or eyelid lift. Talk to Dr. Small about the possibility of scheduling one of these procedures along with your post-bariatric reconstruction.
