Demand for plastic surgery is on the rise and it’s not just women visiting the offices of their plastic surgeons today. Men are also tuning into the many benefits of cosmetic procedures, from surgical options to non-surgical treatments that offer fast results with minimal downtime. While men have different aesthetic goals than female patients, they are finding that the same procedures that work well for women can be tailored to meet their needs as well. Check out the top cosmetic procedures men are seeking today.

Surgical Procedures

When it comes to plastic surgery, it appears men are nearly as willing to go under the knife as women to get the results they want. Some of the surgical procedure performed most frequently on men, according to 2014 data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), include:

  • Rhinoplasty (nose reshaping)
  • Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)
  • Gynecomastia (breast reduction surgery)
  • Liposuction (body contouring)
  • Rhytidectomy (facelift)

More than 204,000 men underwent surgical procedures during 2014, which comprised around 13 percent of all procedures performed. Other procedures commonly sought by male patients included dermabrasion, hair transplantation and chin augmentation.

Non-Surgical Treatments

Men are also realizing that non-surgical treatments, such an injectable procedures and skin rejuvenation can benefit them as well. According to the ASPS, men made up eight percent of all the patients seeking non-surgical treatments in 2014, which marked a 67-percent increase since 2002. The most common procedures men requested included:

  • Botox injections
  • Laser Hair Removal
  • Microdermabrasion
  • Chemical Peels
  • Soft Tissue Fillers

Other non-surgical treatments men tend to capitalize on include laser treatments for skin rejuvenation and vein elimination. All of these treatments are performed on an outpatient basis, and most patients are able to return to work the same day or the day after. Men may opt to have their treatments on a Friday, so they have a full weekend to allow any telltale side effects to subside before they head back out into the public eye.

Men may be seeking similar treatments to women, but their aesthetic needs tend to be very different. Men have a different skin texture and typically have different concerns about their skin than women do. At the same time, while men want to shave years off of their appearance, they don’t usually want results to be as dramatic as women in order to preserve their distinguished, masculine look.

Because the needs and desired outcomes for men tend to be different, it is important to select a plastic surgeon experienced in treating male patients. At Ocean Plastic Surgery, Dr. Stephen Small works with both men and women to help them determine the best treatments to meet their specific aesthetic goals.
